Student-Athlete Spotlight - Aarna Verma

SEPTEMBER 10 - Congratulations to Aarna Verma for being recognized in the first Student-Athlete Spotlight of the 2026-27 school year! Verma has made a name for herself as a leader on the WPS volleyball team, earning the role of captain during her fourth season with the Lakers. After making the varsity roster in 2023 as the team's only eighth grader, Verma has grown from the youngest player on the court to one of the players younger teammates now look up to.

Verma has also made an impact statistically this season. Through 26 sets, she has recorded 182 assists, averaging 7.0 assists per set, along with 14 service aces and 92 digs. While her statistics show her impact during games, Verma said her favorite parts of playing for WPS goes beyond the numbers.

"I am so grateful to be a part of the growing program and can't ever imagine anywhere else," she said. "One of my favorite memories from WPS volleyball was teaching our Assistatnt Athletic Director and Head Athletic Trainer, Robert O'Quinn, how to line judge during Senior Night 2024. It's unrelated to the actual gameplay of the sport, but is noteworthy as it reminds me of the unity within WPS faculty and students and reinforces that volleyball is meant to be FUN!"

Her leadership and connection to the program have made being selected for the WPS Student-Athlete Spotlight especially meaningful. As an underclassman, Verma remembers watching older players receive this recognition and hoping that one day she would earn it herself.

"I always looked up to the older girls as an underclassman and noticed this award, striving towards the acknowledgment," Verma said. "It is an honor to be a part of the student-athletes who have been recognized!"

From the youngest player on the court to a captain and someone younger teammates can look up to, Verma's journey shows how much she has grown throughout her time at WPS.
