JUNE 13 - Windermere Prep is excited to announce the appointment of Omar Peña as the new Head Baseball Coach and Middle School PE teacher. With an impressive background in player development, coaching, and athletic training, Peña brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success at various levels of baseball.
Peña, a graduate of Northeastern University with a Bachelor of Science in Leadership, has an extensive and diverse coaching resume. He holds certifications as a Functional Strength Coach, TRX Certified Trainer, David Wolfe Nutrition Certified, and is a SPARK Certified Instructor, which underscores his commitment to holistic athlete development.
In 2024, Peña joined Windermere Prep as an Assistant Coach, where he quickly made a positive impact. His previous role as Assistant Coach at Saint Monica Prep in Santa Monica from 2022 to 2023 saw him implement effective mental and physical approaches for player development, teamwork, and leadership.
From 2018 to 2023, Peña was the Head Coach at Gainz Athletic Facility in Beverly Hills. There, he specialized in sport-specific training and functional workouts for athletes of all ages, developing both personal and team programs tailored to achieve their desired outcomes. His tenure as a Coach, PE Coach, and Strength Coach at Windward School in Los Angeles from 2012 to 2018 further highlights his ability to teach and mentor young athletes.
Peña's coaching journey began with the YMCA PE Program in Los Angeles from 2006 to 2008, where he taught physical education in LAUSD elementary schools and implemented the SPARK curriculum. His experience as a player and camp counselor with the Worcester Tornadoes from 2008 to 2010 included participation in summer and fall baseball camps for children aged 6-12.
Peña's playing career is equally distinguished. A professional baseball player for eight years, he played with the St. Louis Cardinals, Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, and the inaugural 2005 champions, Worcester Tornadoes. At Northeastern University, Peña was a star-athlete, playing all four years as the program's starting shortstop and contributing to the America East Championship win in 2003. He was also a two-time Cape Cod League selection and part of the NECBL Championship-winning team in 2000.
"We are thrilled to welcome Omar Peña as our new Head Baseball Coach," said Patrick Hollern, Windermere Prep Athletic Director. "His extensive experience, both as a player and a coach, along with his commitment to developing well-rounded athletes, makes him the perfect fit for our program. We are confident that Coach Peña will lead our baseball team to new heights."
Peña's unique blend of professional playing experience, coaching expertise, and a strong educational background in physical fitness and nutrition positions him to make a significant impact on Windermere Prep's baseball program. His holistic approach to athlete development aligns perfectly with the school's mission to nurture and develop the whole student.
