Lakers Fall in Season Opener

KISSIMMEE, FL - The Lakers opened up the 2020 regular season by falling to The First Academy, 56-22 in The Citrus League Season opener at Austin Tindall Stadium. The Royals opened up the scoring with a four-play, 75-yard scoring drive capped off with a four yard run by junior, Dinari Bennett. The Lakers responded as sophomore, Jackson Bennett took the ensuing kickoff and returned it for a 76 yard touchdown. The First Academy retook the lead on a 48 yard touchdown run by Trey Newsome to give the Royals a 14-8 advantage. Once again the Lakers responded as junior, quarterback Zane Fullmer scampered 51 yards into the end zone to tie the game 14 just five minutes into the game. The Royals regained the lead, 21-15 after a 12-play, 94 yard drive.

Following two Lakers punts, The First Academy added to their lead by scoring on their next two drives to build a 35-15 lead. WPS cut into the Royals lead with a 13-play, 67 yard drive capped off with a four-yard touchdown pass from Fullmer to Jacob Lowe. TFA immediately responded with a 54-yard touchdown run to take a 42-22 lead. Just seconds before the half ended, the Royals connected on a 59-yard touchdown pass to take a commanding 49-22 lead into the half.

Sophomore, Mason Williams, led the team with four receptions for 90 yards. Fullmer ended the night completing 10 of 19 for 120 yards and one touchdown. Lowe led the Lakers with 10 tackles and Bennett made nine tackles.
